Brigadier Younus Javed graced the Two-Day Workshop organized by the Institute of Islamic Studies on The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Advancing Islamic Studies – Opportunities and Challenges
The Institute of Islamic Studies (IIS) at Mirpur University of Science and Technology (MUST), in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan, successfully organized a two-day workshop on “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Advancing Islamic Studies: Opportunities and Challenges”. This event provided a platform for scholars, researchers, and AI experts to explore the impact of AI on Islamic Studies, with a particular focus on research, education, and jurisprudence, while also addressing ethical and theological concerns. The workshop began with a welcome address by Prof. Dr. Zafar Iqbal, Dean of FSSH who emphasized the significance of integrating AI with religious studies. Dr. Sajjad Ahmed IIS introduced the workshop themes, setting the stage for insightful discussions. On the first day, Prof. Dr. Faisal Riaz Director ORIC MUST elaborated on the role of generative AI in social sciences, while Dr. Muhammad Zulqarnain, Al-Qadir University discussed the limitations and risks of AI in Islamic Studies, proposing a framework for responsible integration.
The second day featured key discussions on ethical and practical considerations. Dr. Javed Ahmed, Department of Chemistry delivered a thought-provoking lecture titled “The Intersection of Faith and Technology: AI in Religious Studies,” which explored the role of AI in theological discourse and its implications for contemporary scholarship. Dr. M. Kashif Shaikh, Riphah International University presented strategies for incorporating AI into Islamic educational institutions to enhance curriculum development. Engr. Dr. Musharaf Ahmed, Riphah International University provided an overview of popular AI frameworks applicable to religious research. In his closing remarks Brig (R) Prof. Dr. Muhammad Younus Javed SI (M), Vice Chancellor MUST emphasized the importance of responsible AI integration in Islamic Studies, ensuring the preservation of ethical and theological integrity. Vice Chancellor appreciated organizing team, particularly Dr. Asghar Ali Khan, Director IIS, Gulam Mustafa, Chief Organizer, and Dr. Sajjad Ahmed, Senior Faculty Member for their dedicated efforts in making this event a success. The workshop successfully facilitated an interdisciplinary dialogue on AI’s role in Islamic Studies, highlighting both its potential and challenges. The discussions reinforced the need for ethical guidelines in AI-driven religious research and paved the way for future collaborations to modernize Islamic education while preserving scholarly traditions.
