April 14, 2025The Department of Allied Health Sciences launches collaborative Research initiatives to combat Rising Kidney Failure rates in Mirpur AJ&K

A research collaboration between the Department of Allied Health Sciences at Mirpur University of Science and Technology (MUST), Mirpur AJK, and the Kidney Dialysis Center, Mirpur AJK, has been initiated under the direction of Brig (R) Prof. Dr. Muhammad Younus Javed SI (M), Vice Chancellor MUST. The initiative aims to investigate and address the high incidence of kidney failure in the region, contributing meaningfully to societal well-being. This effort holds the potential to positively impact public health in Azad Jammu and Kashmir by tackling a critical health issue and enhancing healthcare services.
Dr. Aqeel Mehmood, Coordinator of the Department of Allied Health Sciences, along with research project supervisors Ms. Farhat Shaheen and Ms. Shehla Irshad Khan, collaborated with the team at the Kidney Dialysis Center to finalize the project. Additionally, students from the department have joined the Kidney Dialysis Center to explore the underlying causes of kidney failure and to improve laboratory standards for dialysis procedures.
The collaboration aims to:
1. Identify the causes of the high incidence of kidney failure in the region.
2. Improve laboratory standards for dialysis procedures.
3. Develop strategies to prevent or reduce kidney failure in the region.
