23rd February is observed as Kashmiri Women’s Resistance Day in the entire State of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and rest of the World. The day commemorates the survivors of the mass rape and torture in the two villages of Kunan and Poshpora in Kashmir on 23Feb, 1991. The survivors from Kunan and Poshpora have become an iconic symbol of Kashmir’s struggle against the Indian Occupation. Mirpur University of Science and Technology (MUST), Mirpur AJ&K observed the day in solidarity with the victims and survivors of this horrific war waged against the Kashmiris.
Department of Education & Directorate of Student’s Affairs of Mirpur University organized a Solidarity Walk in City Campus of MUST, Mirpur where participants expressed their commitment to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
A webinar titled “Do We Remember Kunan Poshpora ?” was also organized by Department of Education from 1400 hours – 1500 hours.
The speakers were Syed Faiz Naqashbadi, Leader APHC, Consultant Human Rights and International Law, Mrs. Shamim Shawl, Senior Leader All Parties Huriyat Conference, Dr. Shagufta Ashraf, Assistant Professor, Dept of Public Administration, University of Kotli & Human Rights Activist specilaizes in Women’s Rights also participated. The session was moderated by Dr. Saira Farooq Shah, Assistant Professor Department of Education. The speakers shared the testimonies of the survivors, the aftermath of the incidence and the legal perspectives of the incidence in light of international and Humanitarian law.
