The Mirpur University of Science and Technology MUST, Mirpur AJ&K successfully organized an enlightening awareness seminar titled “Exploring Mushroom Cultivation: A Path to Entrepreneurship and Food Security” at the Prime Ministers Youth Development Center for Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. The event aimed to highlight the potential of mushroom cultivation as a sustainable business opportunity and a solution to food security challenges. The seminar attracted a diverse audience, including students, faculty members from Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics and Department of Microbiology as well as agricultural experts and entrepreneurs. Distinguished speakers from the fields of agriculture, food science, and entrepreneurship shared their insights on the economic and nutritional benefits of mushroom cultivation.

The seminar commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Mohsin Zafar, Focal Person of the Prime Ministers Youth Development Center of MUST, who emphasized the importance of innovative agricultural practices in addressing local and global food security issues. He praised the initiative for aligning with the university’s mission to promote sustainable development and entrepreneurship. Mr. Basharat Mahmood, lecturer Plant Pathology, University of Poonch Rawalakot AJ&K and as an expert in mushroom cultivation, delivered a keynote speech on the technical aspects of mushroom cultivation, including suitable varieties, growing conditions, and harvesting techniques. Dr. Mian M. Zeeshan Javaid, Chairperson Department of Pharmacy explained the nutrition and food metabolic constituents of the mushrooms for food and health related aspects. He discussed the role of mushrooms in combating malnutrition and ensuring a sustainable food supply. Similarly, Mr. Muhammad Aqib Saeed, Coordinator Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics spoke regarding the importance of Mushroom in Human nutrition and Food industry.

Prof. Engr. Dr. Khuram Pervez Amber, Director QEC highlighted the importance of successful microenterprises and entrepreneurship, he shared his journey of building a thriving business models under the platform of HESSA, inspiring attendees with practical tips and success stories. The seminar underscored the potential of mushroom cultivation as a low-cost, high-reward business model. Attendees were encouraged to explore this venture as a means of self-employment and rural development. In his closing remarks by Dr. Mohsin Zafar, Focal Person of the Prime Ministers Youth Development Center of MUST concluded the event by thanking the speakers and participants for their active involvement. The seminar received overwhelming praise for its informative and practical approach, leaving attendees inspired to explore mushroom cultivation as a viable path to entrepreneurship and food security.
