The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking

The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking is an initiative that evaluates and ranks universities based on their commitment to sustainability. The ranking focusses on 6 key criteria/categories that reflect various aspects of environmental sustainability, campus management and educational influence. Here’s an overview of the six criteria:

1. Setting and Infrastructure (SI)

This criterion evaluates the green campus environment, including the overall infrastructure and space dedicated to green initiatives. It assesses factors such as the amount of open space on campus, efforts to maintain green areas and the university's policies towards sustainability planning. A green and sustainable infrastructure forms the foundation for universities aiming to be environmentally responsible.

2. Energy and Climate Change (EC)

This criterion looks at how universities manage their energy consumption and the steps they take to reduce their carbon footprint. It includes indicators like the use of renewable energy sources, energy efficiency measures, smart building initiatives, and policies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Universities are also evaluated on how they adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

3. Waste (WS)

The waste management practices of universities are crucial to sustainability. This criterion assesses how institutions handle solid waste, including reduction, recycling, and hazardous waste treatment. Universities are encouraged to minimize waste generation and adopt practices that enhance waste management efficiency, such as campus-wide recycling programs and composting initiatives.

4. Water (WR)

Water conservation and management are essential for environmental sustainability. This criterion examines how universities use water efficiently, promote water-saving initiatives, and manage water-related infrastructure. It also includes wastewater management practices and how campuses reduce water wastage through technologies like water-efficient appliances and rainwater harvesting systems.

5. Transportation (TR)

This category focuses on the sustainability of transportation systems within the campus. It evaluates efforts to reduce carbon emissions by promoting alternative transportation modes such as cycling, walking, carpooling, and the use of electric or hybrid vehicles. Universities are also ranked based on the accessibility of public transport options and the implementation of policies that minimize the use of private cars.

6. Education and Research (ED)

The final criterion focuses on the role of universities in advancing sustainability through education and research. It assesses how institutions incorporate sustainability into their curricula, raise awareness about environmental issues, and conduct research related to sustainable development. This category also includes outreach activities and collaborations with external organizations to promote sustainability on a larger scale.
